ANSI B1824.5M is a standard developed through the procedures of,The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. B18.2.4.5M is under, the jurisdiction of ASME Standards Committee B18 and is the, direct responsibility of its Subcommittee 2.,2. The chemical and mechanical requirements for these nuts are included,in the following ASTM standards: ASTM A563M Carbon and,Alloy Steel Nuts [Metric], page B-68, and ASTM F467M Nonferrous,Nuts for General Use [Metric], page B-109.,3. The dimensional requirements of this standard have been coordinated,to the extent possible with ISO 4035 Hexagon Thin Nuts (Chamfered),-Product Grades A & 8 In sizes larger than M12, the minimum, thickness values for the ISO nuts are less than those of this,standard,4. ASME Standards Committee B18 has developed new language for, quality assurance and dimensional conformance which is expected,to be used in all product standards as revisions or addenda are issued.,The draft of the metric hex nuts - Style 1 includes this language,in Paras. 16 and 17, page D-7. Tables similar to the one in,Para. 17.1, page D-7, are expected to be developed for each respective, standard to use with the new language.,5. ANSI B18.2.4.5M-1979 (R 1990) is approved for use by the Department,of Defense and other agencies of the U.S. Government in their, procurement of metric hex jam nuts. The B18 part numbering system, for these products is included in ASME B 18.24,2 ~ Part Identifying,Number (PIN) Code System Standard forB18 Internally Threaded,Products. Government requirements covering standard item selectiont, part numbers, quality assurance and packaging have been omitted,in this reprint of B18.2.4.5M. For this information, refer to the, complete ANSI B1&245M-1979 (R 1990), copies of which are available, from The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Three Park,Avenue, New York, NY 10016-5990, USA.,GENERAL DATA .,1. Scope,1 d This standard covers the complete general, and dimensional data for metric hex jam, nuts recognized as American National Standard.,1 .2 The inclusion of dimensional data in this, standard is not intended to imply that all of the,nut sizes in conjunction with the various options, described herein are stock items. Purchasers, are requested to consult with manufacturers, concerning lists of stock production hex jam, nuts.,D —24,Fax:062084389 Sep 19 2001 9:16 P.02/05,ANSI,B18.2.4.5M,1979 (R 1990),METRIC HEX JAM NUTS HEX NU,2. Comparison With ISO Standards,2.1 Hex jam nuts as covered in this standard, have been coordinated to the extent possible, with ISO 4035. The dimensional differences, between this ANSI standard and ISO,4035 are very few and relatively minor. None, affect the functional interchangeability of nuts, manufactured to the requirements of either.,2.2 At its meeting in Varna, May 1977, ISO/,TC2 studied several technical reports analyzing, design considerations influencing determination,of the best series of width across flats, for hex bolts, screws and nuts. A primary technical, objective was to achieve a logical ratio, between underhead (nut) bearing surface area,(which determines the magnitude of the compressive, stress on the bolted members) and the, tensiie stress area of the screw thread (which, governs the clamping force that can be developed,by tightening the fastener). Table 1 lists, the sizes selected by ISO/TC2 to be ISO standard.,M10 nuts with 15 mm width across flats, are currently being produced and used in U.S.A,and many other countries of the world. This, size, however, is not an ISO standard. Unless,M10 nuts with 15 mm width across flats are specifically, ordered, M10 nuts with 16 mm width, across flats shall be furnished. 、,2.3 Letter symbols designating dimensionaJ,characteristics are in accord with those used in,ISO standards, except capitals have been used, for data processing convenience instead of,lower case letters used in ISO standards.,3. Dimensions. Alf dimensions in this standard, are in millimeters, unless otherwise stated.,4. Width Across Flats,4.1 The width across flats shall be the distance, measured perpendicular to the axis of,the nut, between two opposite wrenching flats.,4,2 Regardless of nut material or manufacturing, process, no transverse section through, the nut between 25 and 75 percent of the actual, nut thickness as measured from the bearing, surface shall be less than the minimum width, across flats specified in Table 1.,4.3 Maximum width across flats shall not be,exceeded, except that for mtlled-from-bar nuts, made of nonferrous materials the specified, maximum width across flats may be e……
